The crowd sees the rounds, from the sweat flying to the triumph promised...
Kat’s Tripod provides documentary combat sports photography for fighters, gyms, coaches and promotions across Central Queensland, Sydney and selected locations across Australia. From MMA and boxing to Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the focus is on the preparation, people and moments surrounding competition.
MORE THAN THE FIGHT
Combat sport has an obvious climax when the bell rings.
It does not end there; it began long before in the training rooms, with showing up again and again.
In the relationship between fighter and coach, where such trust is forged. In the preparation nobody sees. In the moments when there is nothing left to perform for.
My approach is documentary first.
I work around what is already happening rather than constantly interrupting it for the photograph.
The result should feel like your sport.
Not like a photoshoot pretending to be one.
FIGHTER PHOTOGRAPHY
The work before the result.
Individual fighter sessions are built around training as it actually happens.
Coverage can include:
- pad work
- bag work
- sparring
- grappling
- strength and conditioning
- coaching
- preparation
- recovery
- portraits
- details
- moments between rounds
COMBAT GYM PHOTOGRAPHY
The room matters too.
Every combat gym develops its own rhythm, from rituals and different expectations to coaches who teach differently in their unique personalities.
That identity is worth documenting.
Gym photography can cover:
- classes
- fighters
- coaches
- juniors
- competition teams
- member stories
- training culture
- portraits
- facilities
- campaigns
- community events
Coverage is available as a one-off commission or across multiple sessions where you need a broader visual library.
The goal is not simply to photograph your equipment or fill your social feed.
It is to show people what it feels like to train there.
FIGHT NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
BELL TO BELL. AND EVERYTHING AROUND IT.
Fight night is more than the action inside the ring or cage.
Depending on access and the scope of the event, coverage can include:
- venue preparation
- fighter arrivals
- wraps
- warm-ups
- backstage
- walkouts
- competition
- corners
- coaches
- officials
- crowd and atmosphere
- sponsors
- post-fight reactions
- presentations
I photograph the obvious moments, with the clashing of fists and legs, but I also look for the ones happening just outside them.
A coach watching from across the room, with hope in their heart.
A fighter sitting alone before the walkout, while their hands are being wrapped, grappling with their own bravery.
The expression after the decision.
The room once the noise is over.
Fight-night coverage available from $2,500.
FOR PROMOTIONS + ORGANISATIONS
Strong event photography should keep working after fight night finishes.
Coverage can be commissioned for:
Event promotion • websites • press • sponsorship • athlete marketing • social media • advertising • organisational archives
For promotions that need ongoing imagery, coverage can also be structured across multiple events rather than treating every card as an isolated commission.
That creates consistency without making every gallery look the same.
DOCUMENTARY STORIES
Some stories need more than one night.
A fighter preparing for the biggest bout of their career, in their brave soul.
A coach building a new generation, passing down old knowledge, their way.
An athlete returning after injury or time away, choosing themselves.
Women carving out space in combat sports, in taking up space while a regional fighter tries to break into a larger circuit.
A gym changing with the people inside it, community transforming into something bigger than the four walls
These stories can be documented across several sessions rather than manufactured in one afternoon.
Where the project calls for it, photography and journalism can also sit alongside one another.
The photograph is part of the story.
Not a replacement for it.
SHORT-TERM PARTNERSHIPS
For gyms, fighters and promotions that need more than one session.
Short-term partnerships can be structured around a campaign, fight camp, event series, athlete story or concentrated period of training.
Each session can focus on something different.
Training.
Portraits.
Preparation.
Competition.
The people around the athlete.
The result is a broader body of work than trying to force everything into one shoot.
THE WORK BEFORE THE BELL MATTERS.
The result will be recorded. I am interested in what it took to arrive there.
Tell me about your project.
Whether you’re a fighter preparing for competition, a gym looking for stronger imagery, or a promotion planning your next event, tell me what you’re working on.
A few lines is enough. I’ll come back to you with the best way to approach it.
